Hawaii Mission Children's Society Library
Three generations made a visit to HMCS today. Ibby and I looked at the Thurston photographs on file. Ruby took the museum tour and Mason sat at a table on the lanai and drew pictures. We enjoyed a nice lunch at the cafe-Greek salad, a Greek wrap, and 2 bagels with cream cheese. Although it is a warm day we were quite comfortable under the shade of the big trees. It is a lovely peaceful way to spend the afternoon and parking was surprisingly easy. Ibby paid to have several of the relative's photos put on to a disc as there were some that we hadn't seen before. She also began reading thru documents related to the Thurston family in Hawaii. It was news to us both that Queen Kapiolani had breast cancer shortly after Lucy Thurston did. Her surgery went well and she was sent home to recover. Unfortunately she got an infection that proved fatal. Also new to us was mention of Sarah Andrews' childhood friendship with Asa Goodale Tyerman Thurston. Sarah's memorial provided this information as well as mentioning the financial troubles that led up to Asa's death. Lots of interesting stuff there.
